America!...The Red, White & Blue was created in 2006 as a reaction to growing Islamaphobia in media. I was particularly interested in depicting the labeled term "Dangerous Terrorists" and how such words resonated with innocent and peaceful members of the Muslim faith. Additionally, when we think about the American flag and the idea that these colors are to symbolize and perpetuate universal principles that all citizens should benefit from, one can begin to wonder. The flag's colors indicate Red, strength, and courage; White, purity and innocence; and Blue represents justice, vigilance, and perseverance. The question remains: Does this hold for all citizens of our country? Were these values created to benefit a particular group of people? Or those from marginalized groups are afforded a different reality with historically contrasting experiences. The three images are rich in colors, resembling the American flag, yet with cynicism; they reflect the flag’s meaning using Islamic symbolism and a figure who happens to be a Black Muslim woman.
